1. Stay with the winner.

2. Between a good company and a cheap but lousy company – I will choose the good company.

3. I don’t trade just for a good quarter/ bad quarter.

4. I look at things from a 3yr economy cycle.

5. I would rather stay with consensus then be lonely and out of consensus.

6. There is reality and there are stories.

7. Market flat, sell straddle; is no view a view?

9. Why are UK bank stocks down? More sellers than buyers!

10. Why are UK bank stocks down but their peers are up? UK market is on holiday!

The end game

When the Philadelphia 76ers lost to the Miami Heat 4-1 in the 2011 NBA playoffs, Doug Collins, head coach of the 76ers, had this to say during the post game interview: “In sports, things don’t come to a slow halt; you wake up the next morning and it’s over.”

That’s pretty scary isn’t it? One moment you’re pumping your fists in the air, cheering your team on and the next, the court is empty and the game is over.

All stories – even the best ones – must be discounted to a certain degree when used as a basis for action, because they are ultimately imperfect descriptors of truth and reality. In other words, be prepared to be wrong.

One of the reasons why Intel, the US-based semiconductor manufacturing giant, decided to build their latest wafer fabrication plant in Singapore, was because of what laid beneath the surface in the northern part of our island.

The senior project manager who evaluated Singapore as a possible site for a new plant, explained: Wafer fab plants need to be insulated against even the slightest vibrations, because they are producing memory chips in the size of nanometers – any vibration is highly disruptive to the production process.

What delighted the Intel planners was when they found a whole granite seam buried deep beneath the surface of the Woodlands region through some ground studies.

And so they drove in more than a hundred piles right into the granite seam and used it as a foundation for the wafer plant.

Recently, they had to construct a small facility right next to the plant and piling was required. What was surprising was that they used compression piling – big machines were used to hammer the piles into the ground – but because the main plant was so securely founded, the piling work did not affect the sensitive work at the main plant.

Consciously or not, all of us have anchors that we ground our lives on. What is your anchor? Is it secure?

Consistency is the key

One of the judges on the hit dance reality show, So You Think You Can Dance (season 7), commented that the one quality that dance choreographers look for, in deciding whether to hire a dancer or not, is consistency.

The dance choreographer needs to know if he/she can trust the dancer to execute the dance piece when they go up on stage.

And so after watching the contestant perform over a number of weeks, this judge was obviously won over by the dancer – he told the contestant: “I will hire you!”
